    Suitable Substrates

The substrate must be sound/stable, dry, clean, and free from all substances that may prevent good adhesion. In Germany: Follow VOB, part C, DIN 18 363, section 3.

    Substrate Preparation

Renders/Plasters in Mortar Groups/Classes PII (Lime-Cement Mortars) and PIII (Cement Mortars) / Minimum Compressive Strength according to DIN EN 998-1: 2 N/mm2: Solid renders/plasters with normal absorbency require no preliminary treatment. Prime highly porous, sanding or absorbent renders/plasters with OptiGrund E.L.F. or CapaSol LF.

Gypsum and Ready-Mixed Gypsum Plasters of Mortar Group PIV / Minimum Compressive Strength according to DIN EN 13279: 2 N/mm2: Prime with Caparol-Haftgrund. Sand/grind sintered gypsum renders/plasters, remove all sanding dust and prime with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.

Gypsum Wallboards: Prime absorbent boards with OptiGrund E.L.F. or Caparol-Tiefgrund TB. Prime highly compact, smooth boards with Caparol-Haftgrund to promote bonding.

Gypsum Plasterboards (Sandwich Type Plaster Boards / Am.: Drywalls): Sand/grind off filling burrs. Prime and strengthen soft gypsum areas (repair patches) with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB. Prime with Caparol-Haftgrund, OptiGrund E.L.F. or CapaSol LF. For boards with water-soluble content that leaves marks, apply one priming coat of Caparol AquaSperrgrund.
In Germany: Follow BFS Data Sheet No. 12.

Concrete: Remove all residues of releasing agents and chalking or sanding substances.

Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) / Cellular Concrete: Prime with a 1 : 3 mixture of Capaplex and tap (potable) water.

Facing Brickwork and Fair-Faced Sand-Lime Brickwork: Coat without any pre-treatment.

Sound/Stable Existing Coatings: Matt, slightly absorbent coatings can be treated without a preliminary preparation. For large-area application on seamless surfaces the open time can be prolonged with a priming coat of CapaSol LF or OptiGrund E.L.F. Roughen/sand glossy surfaces and enamel coatings. Prime with Caparol-Haftgrund.

Unsound Existing Coatings: Completely remove unsound coatings of enamel, dispersion/emulsion paint or synthetic resin-bound (organic) render/plaster. Apply one priming coat of Caparol-Haftgrund on slightly absorbent, smooth surfaces. Apply one priming coat of OptiGrund E.L.F. or CapaSol LF on highly porous, sanding or absorbent substrates. Remove unsound coatings of mineral paint by mechanical means and remove all sanding dust. Prime with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.

Acoustic Ceilings with Sound-Absorbing Elements/Boards or Renders/Plasters: The restoration of acoustic systems requires a special procedure. Detailed instructions are provided in the German Caparol restoration manual on spray technology: #843604 CP Handbuch Spritzverarbeitung. This manual can be requested via Caparol. If necessary, please ask for advice.

Glue-Bound Distemper (Limewater Colour/Paint): Wash off the existing distemper very thoroughly, allow to dry and prime with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.

Uncoated Woodchip/Ingrain, Relief or Embossed Wallpapers made of Paper: Coat without any pre-treatment.

Non-Adherent Wallpapers: Remove the wallpapers completely and wash off all residues of wallpaper paste/glue and waste paper. Prime the substrate with Caparol-Tiefgrund TB.

Mildewed/Mouldy Surfaces: Remove fungal (fungi/mildew/mould) attack by wet cleaning, then use Capatox or FungiGrund and allow to dry thoroughly. Prime according to the type and condition of the substrate. Apply a finishing coat of Indeko-W, Malerit-W or Fungitex-W on badly infested surfaces in compliance with legal and official regulations (follow e.g. Ordinance on Biocidal Agents and Ordinance on Hazardous Substances).

Surfaces Stained by Nicotine, Water, Soot or Fat/Grease: Remove nicotine, soot or fat/grease stains by washing with tap water adding a fat-dissolving household detergent, then allow the substrate to dry thoroughly. Clean dried up water stains with a dry scrubbing brush. Apply one insulating prime coat of Caparol AquaSperrgrund. Apply one finishing coat of Aqua-inn Nº1 on highly soiled surfaces.

Wood and Derived Timber Products: Coat with water-thinnable (-dilutable), ecologically compatible Capacryl acrylic enamels or Capacryl PU enamels.

Small Defects: After having completed the necessary preparations, repair small defects with Caparol-Akkordspachtel in accordance with our processing specification, and if necessary, prime subsequently.

    Method of Application

Apply with paint brush, paint roller or airless spraying equipment.
Airless application: Spray angle: 50°; Nozzle size: 0.021” - 0.026"; Spray pressure: 150–180 bar
Clean tools immediately after use with water.

    Surface Coating System

Priming or Intermediate Coat: Apply CapaSilan diluted to a max. of 10 % with tap (potable) water.
Finishing Coat: Apply CapaSilan diluted to a max. of 5 % with tap water.

    Consumption

Approx. 140 ml/m2 per coat on an even (smooth) substrate. On rough-textured surfaces correspondingly more. The exact consumption is best established by a trial coating (test area) on site.

    Application Conditions

Lower Temperature Limit for Application and Drying:
+5 °C for product, substrate and ambient air.

    Drying/Drying Time

At +20 °C and 65 % relative humidity surface-dry and recoatable after 4 - 6 hours. Completely cured and ready for stress after approx. 3 days.
Lower temperatures and higher relative humidity extend the drying time.

    Note

Stir and sieve the paint thoroughly before airless spray application. When using Caparol-Tiefgrund TB in the interiors, a typical solvent odour is released, hence proper ventilation must be provided during application and drying. Use non-aromatic, low-odour AmphiSilan-Putzfestiger in sensitive areas.
To minimize streakiness and texturing (roller marks) and to avoid product accumulation on edges, we recommend to directly treat the surface of the freshly applied paint with a suitable medium pile roller,
e.g. Rotanyl 18 made by Rotaplast.
Touching up surfaces is depending on many parameters and may be visible after drying.
(In Germany: See BFS Data Sheet No. 25)
