Energy Savings Calculator

Our energy savings calculator will give you an idea of how much you could save by installing certain energy saving measures in your home. Focusing on external wall insulation, loft insulation and double glazing, the calculator tool can also give you an indication of available funding and the likely cost to you.

Please be aware that the calculations are based on certain assumptions and are only meant to be a guideline to the sort of saving you might expect to make. We have no control over external influences affecting fuel costs and individual consumption.

Annual utility bill?

Make sure you enter your total annual bill for both gas and electricity. Also add in any other fuel costs such as oil, coal, wood as appropriate. The average annual utility bill in the UK is approx. £1500.

External wall insulation

The energy saving calculation is based on an insulation thickness of 90mm. The U value will improve from 2.10 prior to installation to 0.30 after installation, to comply with current Building Regulations. The reduction in the U value means your walls will have an improved thermal performance of 80%. For more information on how to achieve improved U values, please contact your energy expert.

Loft insulation

The energy saving calculation is based on a depth of 270mm of insulation being installed in the loft space. The U value will improve from 2.30 before installation to 0.19 after installation, to comply with current building regulations. The reduction in the U value means your loft will have an improved thermal performance of 92%. For more information on how to achieve improved U values, please contact your energy expert.

Double glazing

The U value will improve from 4.80 prior to installation to 2.80 after installation. The reduction in the U value means your windows will have an improved thermal performance of 42%. For more information on how to achieve improved U values, please contact your energy expert.

Calculation method

DECC (Department of Energy and Climate Change) states that around 63% of a household's utility bill is attributable to space heating. If you live in a solid wall property built circa 1920, this is more likely to be up to 80%. This future annual utility bill figure is only to be taken as a guide to what you might expect to pay annually for your fuel if you carry out the energy savings measures you have chosen as part of the calculation. For the purposes of the calculation we have assumed that 70% of your annual utility bill is apportioned to actual fuel costs ie related directly to space heating.
